AARON 2012: I was so surprised when Molly contacted me to do a portrait. It also seemed that the time she would be in Columbus would be a very opportune time because it was January and I was in the midst of commemorating MLK Day. As I sat there posing for the portrait, I kept thinking to myself, I really hope that this is seen by youth around the world and I hope it helps them to see that they can today be involved in community activism like Bayard Rustin was. Unfortunately he was driven out of the civil rights movement for being gay. I’ve been told that I’m an example, a role model and a mentor. I don’t think of myself or see myself as being an example, a role model nor a mentor. However, if this portrait makes me an example, a role model and a mentor because it inspires or uplifts others to get involved in their community to make a difference then I guess I better get comfortable with those labels cause I’m not done working just yet.
